The Heart Centered Animal Assisted Practices certificate program is a comprehensive 200 hour training grounded in current research and ethical practice. With a strong focus on animal well-being this competency-based curriculum provides you with the necessary skills and experience to incorporate animals into your professional career, elevate you to the next level in your existing animal-assisted practice or introduce you to this emerging field to provide a solid foundation in which to grow your practice.

Based on a community of practice model the two lead instructors, Kirsten Hargreaves and Carla Webb, use their heart-centered approach and over fifty years of combined experience and training to support and encourage students both during and after completion of their studies. All graduates have access to an ongoing community of practice. Alumni HCAAP students will meet monthly via zoom to troubleshoot case scenarios, share ideas, explore special topics and support one another.

Our animal partners in the training include horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs, cats, dogs and chickens. This diversity highlights the beauty and adaptability of the training to any species with whom you want to partner. Our underlying principle is that all animals are sentient beings and respond to respect and heart-to-heart connection.

Level OneWe bring a number of topics together that merge to create a foundation for the work that is rooted in core values for ethical practice. These topic areas make up the HCAAP brand of curriculum and include: ethical considerations, human~animal interactions, science and research around animal behavior, emotion and psychology (sentience science), understanding the lens the student brings to the work, the art of trauma informed practice, brain biology and central nervous system attunement in ourselves/clients/animal partners, ethology, and creating safety for ourselves/clients/animal partners

Level Two We build upon our foundational learnings and knowledge to integrate into practice. Where level 1 focuses on readings, assignments, self reflection and animal observations, level 2 transitions to online group mentoring, individual supervision sessions, case studies and the final in person workshop, you will create a scope of practice for yourself and your animal partners, delve into the population you desire to work with, complete your final assignment,  final evaluation and support call with instructors to assess your next steps to success and join our community of practice

Please join us in this growing and exciting field of Animal Assisted practices.
