What others have said…..

“The one-day “Building Resilience and Self-Esteem in Children” workshop offers teachers, counselors, SEAs, social workers and other professionals who work with youth the opportunity to see how equine-assisted learning and therapy programs would benefit kids who are struggling – struggling with anxiety, cognitive disorders, behavioural issues, challenging home lives, etc… When kids have occasion to unplug and learn social-emotional skills and concepts in a relaxed, outdoor setting, they evolve and they grow; the confidence they build here with Carla can help them personally and academically, and encourage them to consider how best to contribute to the overall wellbeing of their classrooms and communities.

Perhaps even more important for me is that this one-day program provides us professionals an opportunity to come together and share perspectives, informed by our different personal, scholastic and professional backgrounds. This workshop allows us the time and space to consider our own practices, as well as the practices of others, and to reflect collectively on how best to support the kids for whom we all work and care. Better understanding the roles and challenges of our colleagues can only improve the quality of the work that we all do and strengthen the support network we communally create for our youth. As a teacher, I really appreciated learning from SEAs and social workers the skills they use in dealing with challenging students. Additionally, the communication skills that Carla teaches have encouraged me to reflect on and improve the communication strategies I use with my students. Moreover, learning about the whole-brain state and how to access it mean that I now have one more tool in my arsenal to help me in the classroom. Inter-professional development opportunities like this one are rare, so I would strongly encourage anyone who works with children and youth to jump at the chance to participate in a “Building Resilience and Self-Esteem in Children” workshop with Carla at Empowered by Horses.”  Lindsey Parker – Teacher
