meet the donkeys
Although included in the equine family, donkeys are by no means similar to horses, in fact, they are markedly different. Evenso, I had been considering the idea of welcoming donkeys to the farm (unbeknownst to Steve) and, as luck would have it, one of our clients knew somebody who knew somebody, who knew somebody … . I presented Steve with a sound argument―at least it made sense to me, and they arrived on Good Friday in 2021. It’s been three years and still, I often feel like I’m in donkey kindergarten. So much to learn!
Eugene (Approximately born in 2009)
Eugene, the grey-haired miniature donkey, is deeply connected to his buddy, Walter. He is gentle and sweet, and has a grounded presence, especially with people who match his demeanour. Eugene is very subtle in slowly positioning himself to have his butt scratched. He gives off a wise and soulful vibe….until a certain mood strikes and he becomes Walter’s playful buddy.
Walter (Approximately born in 2010)
“Walter the Wise” is a calm and grounded miniature donkey with wheat coloured hair. His connection to Eugene is as strong as Eugene’s is to his and both are experts at stillness. He can sometimes be wary of having a halter or fly mask put on. We suspect some past negative experience but with patience, the offer of gentle ear scratches and perhaps some food, he is building trust with humans and the halters they bring.
One of the more common things that clients report in being with Walter or Eugene is that their groundedness is catchy. Just being near them, they say, helps them feel calm.
